Channa Dal

I found this recipe in a Relish Magazine that my grandmother gave me.  It was so easy to make, and we really enjoyed it.  I definitely plan on making another batch soon.  (I promise it tastes better than it looks!)

The recipe can be found at http://www.relish.com/recipes/channa-dal/.

Saffron Rice

I am not sure why, but I have always had a fascination with saffron rice.  It is not something that I recall my parents serving at home when I was a child, I haven’t ever had it in a restaurant, but there’s something about that bright yellow color as seen on instant rice packets and in cooking magazines.  I’m not a fan of rice mixes, so I tried making my own saffron rice, and was happy with the results.  While it is not the most flavorful of rice dishes, it does have a distince, tea-like scent to it.

Three One Cafe

We have been meaning to try Three One Cafe since reading about it in Lewiston Auburn Magazine earlier this Summer, and finally had dinner there last night.  Located at 259 Lisbon Street in Lewiston, Three One Cafe is one of several new restaurants in this part of town.  By “new” I mean they are new since I have lived in the area, as the downtown has begun to make a comeback in arts and culture.  (I do not recall seeing any restaurants on this stretch of Lisbon Street, aside from Subway, six years ago when we moved to the area.)

Family BBQ

One of my favorite things about Summer is the family barbecues.  Everyone brings a little something, and it makes for a nice variety of family favorites!  My Uncle Leo hosted the most recent barbecue.

WhoNu Cookies

I’m not usually one to be “wowed” by packaged foods, but every now and then I love an Oreo cookie or two (or a small stack) with milk, even though I know it’s not “good” for me.  These new “WhoNu” cookies deserve a little credit though, because while they taste like regular Oreo cookies, they are fortified with loads of good stuff.

Cookin’ Carol’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

Last weekend my husband attended The 15th Annual Mt. Appetite Farm Gala Affair while I was out of town.  He and one of our friends played the opening set, and in return he was sent home with one of Cookin’ Carol’s amazing strawberry rhubarb pies which we’ve both been enjoying this week!

Nezinscot Farm: Baked Goods, Meats and Cheeses…

On our way home from hiking at the Androscoggin Riverlands State Park, we stopped at Nezinscot Farm for a few items.  Knowing we would be grilling soon, we picked up a package of their organic burgers, a few cookies and a mint bliss bar.  As always, the sweets were delicious.  I especially liked (but forgot to photograph) the appropriately named mint bliss bar and the chocolate mint cookies.

Crepes at Marché

Lunch at Marché is one of those Summer vacation treats that I miss during the school year.  With its variety of creative sandwiches and salads, Marché is one of the best lunch spots in Lewiston, Maine.  My favorite menu options, however, are the crepes.

Ice Cream Machine = YUM!

I’m not talking about the ice cream machine at my house that is sadly on its last legs.  I’m talking about the ice cream shop in Cumberland, Rhode Island.
