Alternative Adult Beverages, Part 2…

With the holidays just around the corner, Martinelli’s sparkling cider usually makes it to the table.  It is now available in a few blended varieties including pomegranate, grape, and cranberry.  The grape blend, shown below, is nice with cheese and crackers and I recently enjoyed the cranberry blend with squash lasagne.  The tartness of the cranberry blend would be a nice addition to Thanksgiving dinner as a wine substitute.

Another beverage that has recently gotten my attention is Izze Sparkling Juice.  While it’s not super low in sugar, it really doesn’t have any more sugar than regular juice.  I have tried several flavors, and so far grapefruit is my favorite.

This time of year hot tea is a nice option, and my favorite these days is Stash’s Lemon Ginger, which I have been enjoying in the morning as a coffee substitute.  Stash also makes decaf chai, which is great with a little honey and heavy on the skim milk for a little protein and calcium.

Both are perfect for sipping on while reading a good book, or while working on a sewing project…

Adult Beverage Alternatives…

I love a glass of red every now and again, or a seasonal microbrew by the campfire, but there are times when these beverages just aren’t appropriate or healthful choices…  In my search for interesting, not-too-sweet adult beverages of the non-alcoholic variety, I have found some decent options.  So far my favorite is Q Ginger, which I found at Morning Glory Natural Foods in Brunswick, Maine.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Every now and then I get on a veggie kick, where a certain vegetable becomes a weekly staple in our house.  For a while it was roasted kale, then I moved on to roasted asparagus.  A couple of weeks ago I decided to try roasted brussels sprouts, and enjoyed them so much that we’ve been making them once or twice a week since.

Pumpkin White Chocolate Cheesecake

After having dinner at Pat’s Pizza, while walking down the stairs to exit the restaurant, I noticed the dessert special:  pumpkin white chocolate cheesecake.  I was tempted to go back and order a slice to take home, but reined myself in, convincing myself that I did not need that slice of cheesecake after having hungrily consumed half of a pizza…  For weeks to follow, I found myself craving pumpkin white chocolate cheesecake, and finally made one for a recent family gathering.

Buttermilk Pancakes with Raspberries and Nutella Maple Drizzle

I’ll admit, pancakes are usually a vehicle for maple syrup in my book, but this time I tried topping them differently.

The topping is half Nutella (softened in the microwave), and half maple syrup.  This made for a delicious breakfast, though it’s probably better suited for dessert crepes.  Next time…

Kevin’s “Melting Pot” at Home

Last time we visited my brother and his family, we enjoyed a fondue “Melting Pot” style dinner.  Prior to this fondue experience, the only other fondue I have tried is the traditional Gruyere and baguette fondue served as an appetizer at Fuel.

Moussaka

I’ve been craving moussaka for a while, and finally decided to make a batch of my own at home.  Having never made this dish before, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into on a Friday night after work.  Let’s just say that it took about 90 minutes to prepare the different layers of this dish, then about an hour of baking time before we had our late night dinner.

Eggplant Parmesan Casserole

I love eggplant parmesan, but I hate frying…  This recipe is a fairly easy alternative to traditional eggplant parmesan.

Peanut Butter Cup Blondies

This recipe is from Cooking Light magazine.  I am not fooled into thinking it’s “healthful” but it is deliciously warm and gooey the way brownies or blondies should be.

The recipe can be found at:  MyRecipes.com.

Ginger Chicken, Ginger Sweet Potatoes…

Have I ever mentioned how much I love fresh ginger?  This dinner was an attempt at something somewhat creative with what was in the refrigerator: arugula, boneless chicken, sweet potatoes, and ginger…
